I agree with your post. The insurance sales model is broken. Since the 1940′s, the big insurance companies followed a model where they hired nice guys and gals in every little town in America. They set up shop on Main Street with a friendly face, and asked that person to join every club in town, be active in the community, church, and social gatherings with the idea that you, the customer, would buy from your friendly local insurance agent. The model worked great for the insurance company and the insurance agent. They gave you an insurance quote, you paid it, and they made a lot of money. Sometimes, it is great to have someone local when youy have an insurance problem, but i really like shopping for insurance online and focusing on the lowest price.

The best way I have found to lower your Homeowners insurance is to tell your agent the amount you want to insure your home for. Agents wont tell you that you can do this so they can make up their own amount and reap the commissions. Dont confuse the value of your home with the cost to rebuild it and dont include the value of your land. If you have a $40,000 home and $12,000 in personal property then there is no reason to insure your home for more than it’s appraised value + your personal property value- The insurance company wont give you more than what it is worth anyway. You can insure it for 100k but if it is only valued at 40k then that is what your’e going to get

I like what Kenny says, don’t just assume that you’ll get the best rate because all your insurance is through one company. I made that mistake for quite some time as well. When i finally shopped around I ended up saving over $1000 on my auto and homeowner’s insurance by switching. So be careful and make sure to shop around!

I like the homework the best. People just forget about their homeowner’s policy and just let it renew after renew after renew. They never even look at the policy not even talk about reviewing it. Spend some time each year to thoroughly review your homeowner’s and auto policies. Chances are that you’ll save the money to make up for the time you spent reviewing it.

Guys, it is NOT true that buying Home and Auto Insurance from the same company ALWAYS saves you money.

I feel in that TRAP for 20 years, and I delinked them. What happened was that I reduced my total payment for 3 cars and a house by $780 per year……YES $780 per year.

I am an aggressive Type A personality and shop aggressively. This is the FIRST time I am writing about this saving tip and it is the MOST AWESOME tip. I went to Tier 1 companies ONLY and got quotes for ‘exactly’ what I want, and nothing that I do not want. I asked for EVERY discount, including the final question that ‘asks them what else can I do to get more discount’.

Now, my profile is very simple: Big Home Owner with no claims in 5+ years. 3 Car owner with no teenagers and no claims/tickets in 3+ years. Bottom-line, I am a dream customer of insurance companies.

#3 is a great tip. I live in a part of the country where the value of the land is always almost greater than that of the house on the property, sometimes to the tune of 5-10x more on very desirable land.

So ensuring that you’re only covering the house is very important.
