Weekly Mashup: Happy B-Day HLR!

This Friday is HLR’s birthday so with that in mind we are going out to a Mexican restaurant she likes with some of her friends on Friday. She made shopping for her pretty easy by telling me exactly what she wants :) Thanks dear!

  • Calculate Your Retirement Needs @ Financial Highway. Ray goes over how exactly to calculate your retirement needs. It isn’t quite calculus, but it does require a lot of planning. You need to look at inflation, expected life expectancy and retirement age, and… well, just go check it out!
  • AG @ Let’s Be Curious goes over the math behind the calculation bank’s make to figure out your average daily available balance. The article makes perfect sense but I had never thought of this. If you think you are being shorted on your interest payments it may do you good to check this post out first!
  • Homemade Dishwasher Detergent @ Debt Free Adventure. Matt goes over how to make your own dishwasher detergent and rinse agent as a sequel to his laundry detergent recipe. I think it is a great article if you are looking for ways to become more self-sufficient. I wouldn’t recommend it for someone who is looking to save money, though. You can read the comments to see why :)
  • Adam@ManVsDebt offered his thoughts on retirement as a guest post on Viralogy. An interesting look into the original reasons for retirement and how that has changed. Do we NEED retirement? Adam takes a term I am fond of essentially (consumption smoothing) and applies it to a persons whole life. Why cram all the good times in from 65 to death? Work longer but spread the good times out. Interesting concept! :)
  • Why do we always justify our spending? @ Suburban Dollar. Two of Kyle’s recent purchases? A netbook and an iPhone. How does he rationalize them? Why does he do it? Click to read more and weigh in with your current purchases and justifications. Everyone has them!
  • Weakonomics gave a brief overview of microeconomics. I like micro a lot more than macro, so check it out and give yourself a quick lesson!
  • Is the recovery now or later? Jeff Rose @ Good Financial Cents asks a key question. If you cashed out at the bottom and have not put any money back into equities, you missed the 30% jump from the bottom. Now is not a time to put all of your money under your mattress, so try and start re-investing towards your goals and at your comfort level.

    Thanks for including my article. I appreciate it! PS… making our own household products does indeed save us money, and the more we make, the more we save.

    @Matt Jabs,

    Yup, as mentioned.. they can check out my comments on the actual post to see my reasoning.

    But the short version: For the dishwashing detergent, I would save about $5-10/yr based on how many loads I do. That is a fraction of a drop in a bucket. Surely everyone has bigger leaks than that if they are looking for ways to save money. Add in laundry detergent and what.. another $10?

    BUT, I do love the ideas for self-reliance and sustainability reasons. Which is precisely why I linked it :)
