Hip Teacher Acronyms (Comic #15)

I’ve been thinking about teachers a lot lately.

Is it because Suze Orman says teachers have no real self-worth? Or is it because I can’t wait to see my girlfriend, who happens to be a teacher, tomorrow?

I think the choice is obvious! :)

Right now she is actively seeking employment after grad school which I do NOT envy. The interview process is insane. She has submitted 30+ applications. She is in the 6th round of interviews for one district. And how many applicants are left after 6 rounds? Three! Hopefully this winds up being the last round for her sake.

And at other districts, when they reject you they send you five different letters of rejection. Ouch. How is that for stomping on one’s pride?

Speaking of stomping on pride, I would have LOVED to have a teacher like this. He is down with the cool teenager lingo and throws a few punches, just my kind of teacher to spar with.

Your Favorite Teacher Experience

Ok, this doesn’t have to do with this comic exactly, or even personal finance. But what is your favorite teacher experience?

I think mine has to be my first day with my economics teacher in high school. He decided to teach everyone a little bit about supply and demand. He gave everyone a quiz, started a timer with 5 minutes on it, and set a rule that only his special pencil could be used to complete the quiz. There was no way everyone could complete the quiz in 5 minutes. The bidding started and he quickly made $10. Then the pencil got bid around the room. I forget exactly how high the bidding went (I recall $20), but I refrained. No way was I paying more than a dollar to complete a quiz!

At the end, he pocketed the money he made, collected the quizzes, and continued his lesson. He was a bad ass. Someone (I think the last quiz taker since they didn’t get to resell the pencil and were out the most money) apparently said they would report him and his answer was, “You think I teach because I have to? My wife makes more money than me, report me!” He never gave the money back, the quizzes were graded, and I got a big fat 0. It wound up being a infinitely small portion of the grade, so it also served as a good lesson to grade grubbers to chill out.

His class used a lot of life lessons that were applicable to economics. He was one of my best teachers I have ever had, and for me, that was a great introduction to his class.

I certainly can recall funny and memorable moments with past teachers, but as an aspiring teacher, I also get to see the flipside: the inane things that students do. And believe me, as a teacher in a middle school, the stories are endless. One unforgettable example from student teaching: I gave the kids a geography quiz on the thirteen colonies. One student, who was particularly bad at spelling submitted his quiz with the colony “Virginia” misspelled. His quiz now included the name for female genitalia. You figure it out.

In reposnse to MLR’s post, he is right about how crappy this application process is for securing a job as a teacher :( It’s
super-duper competitive and frustrating, so wish me luck!!!

I hate those texting acronyms! I have so much respect for teachers nowadays because I can just see these teens’ writing skills getting worse and worse.

Good luck with the job hunt HerLifeROI!

Firstly, good luck with the application process, Her Life ROI. I can’t even begin to imagine how much more frustrating my (already not too much fun) job hunt process would be if I had to go through 6 rounds of interviews and STILL not know if I was officially hired. Just stay positive, and hopefully soon you’ll be gainfully employed doing something you love.

As to my favorite teacher, it’s hard to pick out just one. My third grade teacher was quite nice and encouraging my reading habit. She also showed me quite a bit of favoritism during my tenure as her student, possibly more than she probably should. I did very much like her, and much of my fondness for reading can be traced back to her.
