@RobG,

I was looking at more liquid/safe investments.

I don't think I would call p2p lending safe OR liquid, really.

But thanks for the suggestion!

You forgot about investing it in lending it to others... in other works, become a "banker" via P2P lending sites.

Ya i also agree that money market fund is the best way. There are some risk involved in all types of investment but good knowledge and planning will give you good returns for sure.

@ Roger --

Yup, I didn't want to outline those "rules" and risk looking stupid. The way interest rates are going, you need to figure it out on a case by case basis.

Hard to say right now :)

Thanks for pointing out the traditional rules, though!

Not a bad list of suggestions. Personally, I like to think of which type of account would be most suited to which purpose; checking accounts are great for holding money for bill payments or to be withdrawn, saving accounts or money market funds are good for regular or emergency savings (with money market funds also being good for holding money you want to dollar cost average into another investment), and CDs are good when saving for a particular, scheduled event.

Of course, in the current economic climate, my money market fund is yielding less than my savings account (and not that much more than my checking account, sadly) and the rates being offered on CDs are at or below the lackluster savings account rate. At ING direct, my main online bank, you need to get a four year CD before the rate exceeds the current savings account rate, while any CD with less than a one year duration is yielding less than the savings account. It makes you wonder a bit about where these banks expect interest rates to be during the next few years.
